Dr. Christiane Northrup joins me on this episode of the Body Literacy Podcast to discuss Sexuality, Spirituality, and Medicine. Dr. Northrup is a visionary pioneer in women’s health. She is a board-certified OB-GYN who spent more than 30 years in clinical practice and is a former assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine.
Christiane is the three-time New York Times best selling author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom, The Wisdom of Menopause and Goddesses Never Age. In 2013, Reader’s Digest named Dr. Northrup one of the 100 Most Trusted People in America. In 2016, she was named one of Oprah Winfrey’s Super Soul 100, a group of leaders who are using their voices and talent to awaken humanity.
Dr. Northrup is a renegade in modern medicine embracing body, mind, spirit, and emotions to teach women how to tune into their own inner wisdom. Referred to as a rebel, rock star, and authority on what can go right with the female body by her own colleagues, Dr. Northrup is flipping the script on conventional medicine that addresses the human body as a battlefield rather than an abundant ecosystem with the innate capacity for growth, freedom, joy, pleasure, and balance.
In our conversation, Dr. Northrup and I explore why ancient healing arts included sexuality and spirituality as part of a comprehensive, mind-body-spirit approach to whole person health and how this separation in modern medicine contributes to poor health outcomes. We discuss relational alchemy, the role of medicalized childbirth in creating unhealthy relationships with authority, love making as a means to activating the circuitry of the divine, tango as a vehicle for embodiment and the exploration masculine and feminine energies, and much more. Dr. Northrup says there is nothing more healing than a love affair and unhealthy relationships can be the most significant factor in the manifestation of disease.
